My Family spent a month on a road trip through the country of Morocco in 2018. Just me my husband and three kids aged 5, 2 and 1, a rental car and a suitcase. Well two suitcases, one was completely set aside for all the leather, argon oil, rugs, poofs, and pottery I could manage to squeeze into it! (Much to the annoyance of my husband who had to stand around waiting for me to bargain for them and then carry it all!) We love a good adventure and this was probably our best one yet! Morocco was full of surprises. Every town we traveled through was drastically different from the last. We flew into Casablanca from the Cabo Verde Islands and traveled to Rabat for the work my husband needed to do. We stayed in the Medina of Rabat --> shopped the Medina markets of Marrakesh --> stayed in the world heritage site of Ait Benhaddou (Fun Fact: Gladiator was filmed here) --> rode camels to a camp in the dessert in Merzouga and ate, sang, danced and laughed with berber nomads --> spent our evenings on the rooftop terrace of our riad in the Fez medina listening to the cannons signify the end of Ramadan fasting for the day -->explored Chefchaouen (known as the blue city) --> caught a ferry from Tangier to Spain for a few days then back to Tangier --> we ended our time in Morocco in Casablanca reflecting on just how amazing this country is and how visiting one city would never be enough. Taking the extra time to drive the country shattered our ignorant assumptions of the landscape, people and culture. One minute you are watching camels climb rolling dunes of the dessert and the next you feel like you have been transported to the bright green hills of Ireland watching nomadic sheep herders roam the Rif mountains.
